The new Scottsdale Qualifier on January 25 filled on Tuesday. We're excited to see so many teams take this opportunity to play again!
Due to the new event, we were able to move many teams off wait lists for other events. We have one spot available for the Queen Creek Qualifier on January 18. Please apply to the event if your team would like to compete.
"Robot Rumble" at Arizona North Regional
This is a new opportunity for teams to help us showcase the full FIRST "Progression of Programs" to a larger audience. In between the morning matches at the Arizona North FIRST Robotics Competition Regional at the NAU Skydome in Flagstaff, we will be playing exposition matches showcasing both FIRST Lego League and FIRST Tech Challenge. We're looking for about 8 teams to play SKYSTONE and showcase the program.
The event will take place on March 14, 2020 between 10 am and noon.
Interested teams should apply here. We're looking for teams that can play the game at a high level to showcase what FIRST Tech Challenge can really look like. Applications will close on January 31, 2020.
The Robot Rumble started in Illinois. You can get a sense of what it looks like by checking out the video:
ROADS ON MARS
We have a fantastic opportunity for robotics teams to take part in a national NASA Challenge called ROADS on Mars. It is a great way to recruit new team members or to increase STEM education for kids 3rd-12th grade in your community.
If you are looking for a fun way to get new members up to speed on basic programming, robotics, how to fly drones, or just have someone who loves NASA and space, then this is the opportunity for you!
There is a sequence of free workshops coming up in January – a school or team representative just needs to attend one. We are asking for your help in signing up, or reaching out to administrators and educators of school and out-of-school programs to have them sign up and learn more.
The workshops will take place as follows:
·January 4th – Flagstaff, AZ (during FRC Kickoff, 1-4 PM)
·January 10th – Miami, AZ – 9-5PM
·January 11th – Tucson, AZ – 9-5PM
·January 17th – Tuba City, AZ – 7:30-3:30 (Must register by Jan 13)
*This challenges uses Lego EV3 Mindstorm Robots, so programs that have FIRST Lego League teams may also be good candidates to take part in this national NASA Challenge.
Additional Information
ROADS on Mars is a science, engineering, and technology challenge for students in grades 3-12 designed to follow the objectives of the next Mars Rover launching in summer 2020. It includes scientific investigations as well as a Rover Observation And Drone Survey (ROADS).
Schools and coaches need no prior experience and there are opportunities for free professional development and materials support. ROADS on Mars uses introductory robotics* and a safe, easy to operate drone good for students of many age groups. Teams can participate by completing the challenge at their home location, or can apply to take part in the Arizona Regional Challenge, which will take place on May 2nd in Flagstaff, AZ.
Finally, we strive to support STEM education in high needs, diverse programs. There is an opportunity for additional materials support for qualifying programs while supplies last. Educators and administrators can apply for these resources when they attend one of the workshops.
Please forward this information to others in your network, and specifically to individuals who you think may be good candidates to support robotics and STEM in their programs.
Sincerely,
Sean Ryan and Anne Hamlin
